I used KnoppMyth to replace a DVD player. I use it to play DVD's,
downloaded files, etc. It does not seem to have a decent audio CD
player.

KnoppMyth is not MythTV or Knoppix, alone, it is a much improved package
by someone with talent in packaging home entertainment systems.

Last I heard, the author of KnoppMyth, was hired by Microsoft to improve
their offerings, with the proviso that he was allowed to improve KnoppMyth
as part of his job. I assume that they really liked what he did and want
to use KnoppMyth as a test bed.

Here we use the worst possible encryption from a home user's point of
view, it is developed by a local company to be hacker proof and they
do an excelent job of it. One of the US DBS networks uses it too.

However, the box I have uses a well documeted LIRC remote control and
you can program MythTV to control it. I had to build a serial port
adaptor to do it, but that was an IR LED, one resistor and an old modem
cable.

It also depends upon what you want, I understand that you will be able
to get all of the major networks in the US in digital form with fairly
strong signals when the analog cut off occurs. I think where you are
has a lot to do with it. :-)
