Unless there was a grounding problem (missing grounds, different ground
resistance, loops, etc), then the only way the current could of gotten
into the ethernet runs was via EMP. 

It may have leaked through the ethernet cards themselves, but then that would
of happened with a 6 inch cable or 1km. 

Since we were never told exactly where the lightening struck, the surge on
the power line MAY of come from induction, which is a form of EMP (but that's
going a bit far).

This isn't like Jericho, where the EMP from missles detonating so high in
the sky that no one bothered to cover their eyes or duck for cover wiped
out everything electronic, this was a nearby lightening strike.
