Thanks for the link, it is very interesting to see some of the other
setups people are using - I was not surprised to see some MOLLEs in the mix.
My need is basically pens, some notebooks, laptop, cell phone, a few
patch cables and keys, and it has to look good, thus the choice of
leather (I am otherwise pretty informal; but when you are trying to get
new clients in a time of economic uncertainty it makes sense to look
presentable).
I have come across these two interesting candidates:

Note the handle is connected to a wooden dowel which runs the length of
the case, distributing the load and reducing the likelihood of a tear in
the leather at point of maximum stress.

It looks like it will stand on its own instead of flopping over, and the
review by the self-admitted OCD lawyer seems to indicate it looks classy
enough. Will take a 17" laptop too.
