[geeks] Needed: A good sparc workstation: Decision on what we purchased

In case anyone wanted to know...

After asking for comment on a good sparc workstation, we  received several
helpful comments and suggestions.


We purchased a minimally configured Sun Blade 2000 (2x900mhz, 2x36GB, 2GB
RAM, DVD, XVR-500) with a 1 year bumper-to-bumper warranty and technical
support.  This should be all that we need.  The cost for the SB 2000 was
about $300 shipped to my door.

We weren't thrilled with the FC-AL drives but there are still a few FC-AL
servers at work and it should be helpful to go through all the WWN stuff
again.

If they are cheap enough, we might purchase a Type 7 Country Kit.


We forgot to list Solaris 10 as a requirement and a number recommendations
for early 1990's workstation were received.  (Thanks for the trip down
memory lane.)
Sun Rays were also recommended (and to place the workstation in the garage)
but the project doesn't include a new network or extra equipment.  Even more
importantly we don't have a garage!
The "under my desk" was a real requirement due to the purpose of the
workstation--there will be a lot of loading/configuring/patching/etc. of the
OS and working on the new things in Solaris 10.  We will not use the
workstation as a personal machine, etc.  (We use an x86 for that purpose.)
We expect to sell or donate the workstation when this project is over.

It was interesting to watch a request for workstation recommendations morph
into a discussion of servers and server administration (gui or cli) by
some.  Special thanks to those who continued to comment on workstations.

To all with recommendations and observations on Sparc workstations, "Thank
you very much!  Your information was very helpful."


Again, we appreciate all the recommendations and suggestions.  The Sun Rays
may be something for another day.  The server discussion, while not
pertinent to workstations but was not unexpected--we rode that wave, too.
