I suspect that saying 'many eyes make all bugs shallow' or whatever is  
only true if the users are vigilant testers during beta testing, not  
complacent end-users. How did this error get past testing?

I've been around Linux long enough to remember the warnings about  
"destroying monitors with bad X Windows settings" - I've never heard  
of an OS destroying hardware before.
