Or get a slower tape drive.

Or not take backups.

A jumbo packet-compatible switch is not that expensive ($8-12/port),  
and also, remember Gigabit Ethernet is auto-crossover, you can test  
your backup speed without a switch... Or even go for a star topology  
and direct-connect each client... (dual-port Intel GigE PCI-X cards  
are about $30 ea)
