For the record, Debian and Ubuntu users can get command line mail with  
Maildir by dumping the 'mailx' package and installing 'mailutils'  
instead which contains a 'mail' command that is happy to live with  
Maildir.

It calls itself GNU mail, so you might be able to find it for other  
distros that way.
