I've done this a few times, and it never failed to eventually end up breaking
things.  Too much software still ignores system paths, etc.

I've tried this a few times, and I always ended up with new or duplicated user
data showing up on C:, enough to start breaking things or at least causing
wasted space and confusion.

Ditto for the C:\Program Data feature in Windows 7, which is _supposed_ to
keep application data that needs to be changed out of the secure Program Files
directory.  Something always ends up back in Program Files, if not all of it.

Now that I'm running Windows 7, on a single drive, I have started using
Windows 7 Backup since it now has a bare-metal restore option.  That backs up
to an external drive.

I also run Acronis because in the past I've used to to recover from a disaster
with no fuss and fairly quickly.  Acronis will also let you restore even if
you have no Windows CD, still an all-too-common problem with some machine
sales.

Acronis can also solve the OPs data movement problem or facilitate it anyway.
