That'll be the cause of the chaos at the local supermarket (no card
processing). Of course "backbone" in this case refers to BT's backbone,
and it goes a lot further than London. Portsmouth North (not quite my
own exchange) is listed as affected.

Why would he ? He lives off Harrow Road and nowhere near Paddington :)
