Yeah.  After the teachers and textbook writers botched up BASIC.  Talk
about spaghetti code, whew.  Unfortunately, they used an interpreter
rather than a compiler which probably allowed that sort of nonsense.  I
remember having fights with the then head of the math department over
this.  I even taught a semester of Pascal in my high school but I wasn't
allowed to have a textbook because I wasn't a math teacher (at the time
there was no "requirements" to teach a computer language so anything
goes).  I wasn't a fan of Pascal but it did teach the basic ideas of
better programming.
