I started assembling my first one a few months before Hurricane Ike

Amy made fun of me for it at the time, but stopped heckling after the
  storm
when more than once I had something we needed "In the bag!".

Here's my current list of supplies in my "Emergency Preparedness /
  Oh-Shit
  / Bug-Out" bag.

Do you have one? If so, what's in yours?

I don't have one (not seemingly necessary on the east coast) but I
  might recommend some type of
radio to receive information. I just picked up a BayGen Freeplay
that is an AM/FM/SW radio that
works off a spring that is wound and gives you about 20 minutes (or
  more) of reception. No batteries.
It's a bit large but usable. Mine was a $6 special at a thrift
store. It had a broken drive belt which
was replaced for under $4. Also got one of those "Forever
  Flashlight" (commonly known as a
"shaker" light) that uses a super capacitor rather than a lithium
  cell. Holds the charge longer.
Not really bright but in darkness it works OK. IF I could take more,
  either my FT-817 or SG-2020
setup would go along for two way communication.

About the only things that could hit this part of the country would
  be seriously inclement weather,
those pesky terrorists or a tsunami (there is a volcanic island off
the coast of Africa that is predicted
to collapse in the next couple of hundred years). I'm not holding my
  breath.
