Actually on the old cars, and most of the new, the engine doesn't provide any
rigidity to the structure. On a rear drive car like that there are only three
points of support provided by rubber mounts.

I know that you were joking about the firewall issue, but those old car really
did have the engines intrude in the passenger compartment during crashes. Only
later did engineers design the engine mounts and other structure to guide the
engine down and back to keep it from puncturing the firewall.
