Oh, nonsense.  What _is_ appropriate only for academia is absolute
inflexible adherence to structured programming dogma.  (Or pretty much
any other dogma, for that matter.)  Provided it's treated as one more
tool in the toolbox rather than as The One True Golden Answer,
structured programming itself is a very useful technique even in the
real world.
