It's possible Tolkien didn't want Middle Earth to be told by anyone
else, and his family is respecting his wishes. I can respect that, but
I doubt that's the reason.

I don't think anyone CAN reproduce Middle Earth, and frankly, it seems odd to me that there would be such strong desire for it, given that Tolkien is long dead. Must things always grow and expand?
Star Wars, the original trilogy, was pretty good. Beyond that, it has quite frankly, sucked.
Dune, the original book by Frank Herbert, was pretty good. Beyond that, not sure the rest of the books match up to the first (it is a matter of debate).
Rather than get caught up in one world/universe and become a consumer (which is basically why Disney buys anything - to make money off the drone-minded), go and discover something new or something with some different ideas in it.
I do wish I had the time to read (cue the famous Twilight Zone episode), but there are plenty of other SF/Fantasy writers out there with thought-provoking stuff.
