You might want to look at bhyve https://wiki.freebsd.org/bhyve as
that'll give you ZFS storage & PF as a firewall. It's pretty minimal &
requires little effort to get up and running. There's vmrc which'll
take care of deploying linux/free/open/netbsd for you
