To follow up, I ended up scrapping mpt-statusd altogether. I setup
smartmontools a while back to monitor the disks in the raid (using /dev/sg*
to access the drives individually)  and figure a SMART short test daily
overnight and a long background test weekly ought to suffice to keep me
informed if one develops a problem.

I also found I had installed 'lsiutil' from hwraid.le-vert.le ad that helps
me poke the array and see what it's doing (bonus - it works for both SAS
and SCSI cards! :) ). Alas the site is currently down (a pain as they
hosted a repo and my apt-update keeps bitching).

I really ought to write this stuff down when I do it D:
