While I haven't done it yet, I plan to pre-emptively replace fans in my 1U
equipment at home soon. One of my preferred fan companies is Noctua, who do
an excellent job at balancing airflow, long life, and low noise in their
fan designs, and I was happy to see they have a line of fans aimed at 1U
equipment. You might want to take a look at the Noctua NF-A4x20 5V
(40x20mm). They also have a PWM model. There's a good chance a Noctua fan
would be a better fan than what came in the equipment, but they are a
little pricey (~$15).
