Ya....  I'm considering installing a proxy to strip SSL / TLS because I
want to use some software (and machines) from ~25 years ago and it
(they) definitely doesn't support contemporary TLS.

I don't know if something like that would work for you on a technical
level, much less if you would be willing to accept something like that.

I suspect that an SSL / TLS stripping proxy would have less activation
energy.

You are, I am, we all are ... entitled to our own motivations for our
situations.

 From a back end point of view there are differences, though I probably
couldn't articulate them gracefully.  From an end user point of view,
there probably isn't one.  They take your money for -- what I consider
to be and equate to -- a subscription for registering a domain name on
your behalf.

I'm somewhat surprised that there are registrars (or resellers) that
/require/ the use of privacy features.  I would definitely avoid
something like that if I had a chance.
