True. I've been speaking with people, such as customer-facing
front-line people at registrar/reseller outfits, who are not competent
to discuss APIs or to understand the differences and similarities
between a "secure" webpage and an API provided over HTTPS - and an API
provided over some other underlying mechanism.  It's led me to get a
bit sloppy with my language.

Correct.

I _have_ had a small number of people (one? two? three?) float the
possibility of just adding my domain to the substantial number of
domains those people are already managing; taking one of them up on it
was one of the possibilities I was contemplating.  Not ideal but might
have been workable if I hadn't found a better alternative.

There is that.  Such APIs are, in general, not suitable for me either.
Besides, most of them require some setup steps, such as getting an API
key, be performed via a webpage first.
