I think this is a zfs-as-root /specific/ issue and complications around
the boot sector / boot loader.  At least from a Linux standpoint.

More specifically on Linux, the /boot directory is more important to be
on something the boot loader knows how to work with.  With that happy,
you can do more fancy things with / (root).
