Netatalk is AFAIK the _only_ FOSS implementation of Appletalk.
Similarly, Synology almost certainly uses Samba for SMB.
Over afp: (Appletalk File Protocol) drive shares, macOS (i.e. Mac OS
X) and native Mac apps use file forks to store additional metadata.
This should be invisible from any other OS.
Over smb: (Server Message Block, i.e. MS LanManager, later branded
"CIFS") shares, it uses hidden files. The .DS_Store file is often seen
if a Mac has mounted some media:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.DS_Store
Other files' metadata is stored in what are called "AppleDouble" files:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleSingle_and_AppleDouble_formats
e.g. a macOS file called `ReadMe.RTF` would have a companion metadata
file called `._ReadMe.RTF`.
It should not, AFAIK, under any circumstances be added to the file
itself unless you're accessing the media over AFP.
