I guess I'm still thinking of my other hardware, where the drives produce 0
heat, and my video card and proc make good handwarmers, if you've got gloves
on so that you don't burn your hands.

I think it's called "planned obsolescence". :) My mom is complaing that
all of her wedding gifts are suffering from the same phenomenon, and she
"only" been married 28 years.
