Yes, you can.  I've done it on other Powermacs and it works well.  The
only differences are the extra parity bits and they are silently ignored
on the Mac. 

I'm on the lookout for a cheap PCI Powermac to play with MacOS X, anyone
have one and want to trade it for some Sun gear?
