You've never encountered a fried CPU?  What exactly sounds odd about a fried
CPU?   Voltage fluctuations don't get totally smoothed out by the power
supply, and over time wear down the the circutry in the processor, and cause
it to die.  We don't have that problem too often with CPUs, because the
resistors are usually way over-speced for regulating the voltage, but it
happens a lot on older computers (with older power supplies).
