I dunno about the AS/400, but I can tell you a bit about its predecessor, 
the S/36.  To use that one you either had to have ...

	An infinite amount of time and the home phone numbers of about 30 IBM 
support people

	or

	A large yacht.

Ours had MAPICS installed, and the whole kit turned out to be slightly 
inferior to an IBM PC/XT with Peachtree Accounting installed.  The S/36 
setup only cost US$100,000 more than the XT, too.  Not including the 
building rewiring for its special power requirements, or all the employee 
time it took to try and make it do anything useful.

The last time I saw the S/36, it was sitting on our loading dock, our CEO 
having called IBM to come pick it up, and quickly, as rain was forecast for 
later that day.
