I'll check the Sunsolve site but I don't hold out much hope. Both Qualstar
and Sony gave me different st.conf settings. I've tried about 5 different
versions of those and nothing seems to help.

Hi!
Go to http://sunsolve.sun.com and search for 'AIT' -- chances are you'll
find the needed setting for /kernel/drv/st.conf which will send the right
bits to the tapedrive to turn on compression at the hardware level. You'll
of-course need to either 'rm_drv st; add_drv st;' or reboot w/ a boot -r
for the new settings to kick in...
If sun.com can't help try your drive's vendor.... or even a vendor of a
similar drive...
