David,
Lots of folks have characterized the 4/6xx mb as "a Sparc 10 on a VME card".
Mostly true, though I don't have all the details on Sbus speed, SCSI
throughput right to hand.
You should be able to use just about any of the SuperSparc Mbus modules
(SM41,SM51, etc) depending on PROM revision. Differences are in the RAM (30
pin simms on the 4/6xx vs DIMMs on the SS10), and Solaris beyond 2.51 is
unsupported by Sun (though newer Solaris can be installed via an adb hack-
I've done it and it works, though you can't run with any other VME cards).
>From a size/heat/power standpoint, a pizza box SS10 would be an improvement.
The other biggest improvement would be the fact that you weren't running the
SM100 modules. You'll probably notice that, but as I said, you could run
better processors in your existing box. I run dual SM51's in my 630MP, and
it's great.
I'd love to trade you my "extra" SS10 for your 670, since I want the case
with more slots, but I'm not up to a road trip to the East Coast from
Minnesota to make the trade <grin>.
If anyone has a 4/x70 case in the upper Midwest they would trade for a 630mp
case, please speak up.
Steve

Subject: [SunRescue] Rescue this?
We have a 670MP (with two of those horrible SM100s) that we are using as
an internal web server. It seems silly for us to have this kind of box
when we aren't doing anything with it that requires it. But we do need
*something*.
What would be a (sparc) box that would be equal to the 670MP for web
serving but would be a bit smaller and is supported for Solaris 7? In
other words, if we offered it for trade, what should we ask for? And
final question -- is there anyone (In NC, who has access to a truck)
that would want to make such a trade.
Or, is there a MBus module (or two) that, once installed on the 670,
would make me want to keep the thing for ever and ever? (Not that the
SM100s are really stressed right now).
