Manual switch boxes are, in general, really bad for video.  Video is a prett
sensitive signal, and small changes in impedance can make a big difference
in picture quality.  On the other hand, you can get some manual switch boxes
that work just fine, and can pass your signal that's doing 16.7 million
colors, 1600x1200 at 75Hz refresh just fine.  What I've found is that the
WAY too expensive PeeCee "active" switch boxes that emulate a mouse/keyboard
signal for the machine are a high enough quality that you don't lose signal,
even when you've got relatively demanding signals going through them.

Here at the office, we've got basically a no-name 19" monitor with BNC,
VGA-15, and MAC-15 connectors on the back, and it autodetects on power, but
you can change it once its running.  I've been thinking about one of those
for home, but that would take away my excuse to get in and play with the
electronics on these 1962-B's that I've got to tune the picture.

First guess is that it's not getting a sync signal that it understands.
Second guess is that something else is wrong.  :)  Unplug it for a couple of
days (just to be on the safe side), and open it and look for bad solder
connections.  If you can't find anything, check out one of the electronics
repair FAQs of newsgroups (www.repairfaq.something).
