[rescue] Sync on Green

Really!?!
The cable I used was a HD15 to 5 BNC that I picked up from MCM electronics
for $10- $15. I've always left all 5 connected because I was always sharing
it between a PC and a 712. I don't recall trying it with the HD-15 to 3
BNC's that would have shipped with the 712's originally but I don't see why
it wouldn't work.
My VRC-16 shipped with my old DEC 3000/300XL which would have been
contemporary with the 712/60-80i. I sent that cable off with the unit when
I sold it but I think it only had three connectors on the monitor end.
right now I have an old Sun 19" monitor on my 712/80. Works great(HD15 to
13W3 cable)!
I've also had a generic 17" PC monitor(a CTX something) that I switched
between a PC and my 712's/715 on a KVM switch(only shared the monitor the
712's don't see the KVM as a keyboard and so they won't boot). I've never
had trouble using generic SVGA monitors with 712's.
I guess the only thing I couldn't get to work, with the 712, is the old
fixed rate Sony monitors(GDM 1952?). The 712's just won't go that low(brain
tumor vertical scan rates). :(
Unless you have the VRAM, 712's only go to 1024x768 anyway. Remember the
712(7xx,B,C,J etc.) isn't a Sun, it doesn't negotiate a refresh rate and you
can't set it from software. You have to set it manually in firmware.

Oh really!?! I have a 712/80. People(I think Mike N was one of them) that
they
have gotten these machines to work with Gateway Vivitron 1572 monitors
(generally my second or third favorite 15" monitors, after Sonys and SGI.
All
three use Sony screens AFAIK), but I haven't been able to get it to work
with
mine. Is this monitor a SOG monitor, or did people tell me wrong?
I keep being surprised by my Dell Ultrascan 17". Actually I have two. They
don't look a like, and one downright stinks (tops out at 1024x768, poor
refresh
rate, poor color, etc). The other one though presents a rock solid image
even
at 1600x1200 (which is officially too small to work with for me on such a
monitor), and apparently it also supports SOG. Unfortunatly, I need this
monitor for my main desktop, so I can't dedicate it to the 712.
