I use exmh for basically the same reasons.

When I can get to X, there's a graphical client.  And since is is a front end 
to the old Rand Hail Handler (mh, now nmh), this means that when I'm out in 
twiddletittie on the long end of a slow, insecure wire, I can ssh in and still 
read and respond to mail using unfriendly CLI commands, the way the UNIX gods 
intended.
