i used to hate perl.  i still do.  but i do use it now.  i prefer C, but given
how much of a pain in the ass string parsing is in C, sometimes perl really
does win out.

if i need a quick script to grok some text, perl is the way to go.  if i need
a real program to do real work i'll write it in C.
