For hobby use, DNews, but it's not free. For learning about servers
at scale, INN or Diablo. Lots of commercial places use BCandid
(Highwind, Typhoon, etc.).
DNews doesn't scale, but has nice features for small sites, like a
modification of suck feed -- sort of news on demand. If people don't
read groups, they're not downloaded.
