It's not clear that you made a separate initrd for the SMP kernel (man
mkinitrd) or that you relinked the /boot/System.map to the one which
corresponds to the SMP kernel. This comes from /usr/src/linux/System.map
(adjust path accordingly) after you compile the SMP kernel.
Take a look in /boot, if you are running Mandrake or RedHat supplied
precompiled kernels, the System map files should be there, and obviously
named. You _might_ luck out in this regard with the initial ramdisk files as
well.
