The best I have found is the FreeBSD ports system,   pull down the ports
skeletons,  go to the directory  of the package you want and go do a 
make install.   It just works - I am sure its black magic,  but it goes
get libraries and all the dependancies etc and installs them as well.

It just works - marvellous.
