well, i've tossed that theory back and forth a lot in thinking about
it...the 2.2 motors are just too different from the slant-6 to be "based"
from it... overhead cam, other things like the ports on the other side of
the slant from the original 6, other details. No, i'd have to say that the
2.2 was probably 90% a ground-up design.
now, i thought about the problem with the chain mentioned earlier...had to
be a mitsu engine. the A and B v8 motors didn't use chain guides, and the
2.2 and every engine since has used belts, and furthermore were
non-interference designs....break a belt, change the belt, the valves can
_never_ hit the piston. Gotta be a POJ mitsu :)
