You have killed and disabled nscd, haven't you? If not then it is
between your applications and the rest of the world, and you definitely
do not want it there when you're using the normal public DNS.
If you think you want it on for NIS stuff then at least disable it's
ability to cache hostnames by _un_commenting this line from
/etc/nscd.conf:
enable-cache hosts no
