[rescue] Dead Smart-UPS 1000

Got a Smart-UPS 1000 in the mail (fedex) from a friend today, who said
"it worked when I unplugged it, until the battery died" - he didnt know
how to turn off the alarm. 8-)

However, I plug it in, its DOA - no LEDs, no beeps, *nothing* - should
it at least display SOMETHING on the front panel until the batteries are
charged?  Its sat turned on (and completely drained) in the friend's
garage for about six months..
