Here's my worst smell story:

My father got hired as the 7th-8th-grade science teacher at a small
private school in NJ. One excercise in his earth-science curriculum
had to do with testing the diffences in nutrient levels in soil
before and after a forest fire. The before sample was easy, just go
outside and gather dirt. The after sample was trickier, and the solution
he came up with, was to bake the dirt in the oven for 4 hours.
