did you make an /etc/hostname.<interface+instance> containing the name that you
put in /etc/hosts ?

Start physical and work your way up.

o link light?
o dmesg show the card?
o if not maybe see if modinfo shows the module
o if dmesg does show it, what's the link-state?
o ifconfig <ineterfacename> address netmask up plumb
o no luck and it's seen in dmesg and module is loaded then i'd truss the
  ifconfig
o as recenlty discussed, auto-neg is evil
o ndd -get /dev/<interface w/o instance number> link_status
