I have the carcass of a 12-bay 711 (chassis and backplane,
missing only power supply for functionality, plus cosmetic
sides/top) and I've been trying to decide what to do with it
(thanks Big Mike!)
There are two major variants--6-bay and 12-bay. Both use spuds.
It's single channel auto-terminating wide SCSI, whether you
get the 12-bay or 6-bay. Both can *supposedly* do UW-SCSI
even though only a few have the little "UltraSCSI" label on
the front bottom left corner. The only other major difference
is that (same as SPARC 5/20 chassis) the 12-bay will only do
LP 3.5" drives, while the 6-bay will do HH (1.6") or LP (1").
It's hot-swappable IFF your controller supports same--my
Mylex DAC960 does so I'm in the clear.
My only problem is a powersupply--the only source I found for
one wants $125, and for that I feel like just buying a complete
one and getting sides/top--and then conning someone else into
buying the powersupply and building themselves a system.
If I pick up a 6-bay cheap and strip it, does someone want the
chassis/backplane for the cost of shipping? I'd rather have
capacity for more disks than be able to handle HH disks, based
on the inventory I already have.
