First video game console: Game console?!?, WTF? I have COMPUTERS, why do I
need one of those?!?
First computer used: DEC PDP8 (1979)
First computer owned: Timex Sinclaire, bought it, did the numerical analysis
homework that I needed it for, and returned it within 30 days. It
sucked rocks, but I have regretted getting rid of it ever since.
First computer that I really got into: My NEC Multispeed laptop, circa
1987-88. It saved my ass many times over, and AFAIK, is still in service
with the person I sold it to
First Sun used: Gee....., J. Random DARPAnet host...
First Sun owned: 4/370, circa 1993
First SPARC owned: see above
First SMP machine: Sun 4/670, circa 1997, courtesy of some PHB in Rational
Software, who decided NT was the better enterprise computing platform.
I still have this beast. It was my first rescue, BTW...
Favorite machine used: My SMP linux box (2x 550s). Soon to be my NEW SMP
linux
box (2x 1G). Cheap, screaming horsepower is hard to argue with....
Favorite machine owned: A hybrid..... It's a 4/610 (a 4/600 board in a 4/110
chassis). I have two of these running now (always looking for donor
110 chassis....). Best-est one is a quad SM51 rig I got from Big Mike
w/ 128 smegma-bytes of RAM...
Biggest machine I have root on: Hmmmm.... your biggest.....
Seriously, am building a dual athelon honker for one of the projects
at the office. Box will have 1 GB of ram, .7 TB of servable disk in
RAID 5, all for about $4500. This is a proof-of-concept box, if it
works well, next one will prolly top out at around 3 TB for about 2x
the $$. I LIKE bang-for-the-buck projects....
Wondering about Sparc clustering,..... I have lots of little sparcs that want to work together.....
