Bzzt.  Each and every U1 has two slots for hard disks, and the bottom
slot *will* take a 1.6" high drive.  The top slot will only take a 1"
low profile drive.  This option (X5240A) appears to be compatible to
me--I've used a 18GB Fujitsu 1.6" high drive in my U1 and it worked
fine, and I've no reason to believe that a 36GB drive won't work.

Looking at the latest version of the (proprietary) Sun US Price
Book that I have, x5240A is an option for a StorEdge A3500, and
although I *believe* that an A3500 uses spud/jiffy brackets I'm not
sure (and I've no idea what a "barrier plate" is, since our A1000
doesn't seem to have any.)

In other words, this might work, but you might then have to buy
a bracket.  You might have better luck just ordering a bracket
from Sun (or on eBay) and buying the disk from another reputable
seller.  Bill Bradford has (had?) some extra Jiffy brackets which
will work--you might ask mrbill whether he has any left.

Other than that, <AOL>ME TOO</AOL> on everything Rob said in
response to your more general/vague questions.  If there are
specific questions about whether a particular drive is compatible,
this mailing list may be able to help--but generally,
either you need to do your homework or buy from a reputable
vendor.  There's no way that we could provide an exhaustive
list of every disk that's compatible--but every SCA disk that
I've put in which has had either generic or Sun-specific
firmware has worked (except those known to be defunct from
other testing).
