High Volume Low Pressure - it uses a *lot* of low-pressure air to
propell the paint, rather than a *little* low pressure air.

In a nutshell, HVLP sprayers allow much more contol over spray pattern,
better paint economy, and better coverage.  They're pretty much the
de-facto standard for quality spray-on painting of smooth surfaces
(metal, fiberglass, ceramic, plastic, etc).

Never underestimate the power of the plain old roller.  I painted the
entire interior of my present house before moving in, and it only took
one weekend using a regular old roller and paint-pan.

Mine - repair a busted septic tank line.  The smell - OH GOD THE SMELL! 
And the nasty slimy stuff - ugh <blurph>...
