So much for the fabled Dell tech support.
I tried to help a guy out who had a
one-year-old Dell with a ~70 GB IBM drive,
making EXACTLY those noises. After eliminating
every other reasonable cause other than a
drive that was just plain defective, I told him
to have Dell replace the drive, and not to take
no for an answer. They sent him a new drive:
exactly the same model, with the same revison
number. (smacks forehead) Wait, that makes
perfect sense - Dell needed to get rid of their
defective inventory, and this one might not
fail until his warranty has expired.
One more reason why I will never buy another
