Oog. SSH is really going to punish the sparcs... they don't
have the hardware bit rotate the x86 have (well, had until P4).
That is probably contributing to your load problems. A crypto
accelerator would help, except I don't know of any version of
SSH that will use them directly (except perhaps under OpenBSD,
and then probably only on x86)
Also consider bringing gzip down to like -6. Giving it -9
says to it you don't really care about CPU usage, just get it
as small as possible. A lesser setting may not hurt you much
compression wise and may gain you some good speed.

The only thing I find REALLY hurts AMANDA is the lack of tape spanning.
Once they solve that, I think it'll be a great choice for many places.
