Dream: as above.
When implemented by Microsoft: optic nerve hookups are shipped with
installation CD that has "hidden" DirectX v21.5 movie of Pamela
Anderson's last Baywatch show in any-angle, slow mo, high resolution
virtual 3d. However, due to clipping errors, she looks like Madonna
in one of those pointy-bra things.
When implemented by Sun: optic nerve hookups are limited to 8 bit
color, but everything works perfectly. Eventually they offer a 24bit
hookup, which is pathetically slow. Five generations of hardware
later, they ship a true color implementation that people can be happy
with. The optic nerve GUI is still based on a hideous Motif-ish look
and feel.
Reality:
5% of developers continue to crank out 50-75% of the usable,
working code;
65% are Optic Nerve Basic programmers who are focused on alternately
a) trying to reprogram the movable, high-intensity lighting to
silhouette the cute female developer's dress against the light, b)
playing the flight simulator embedded in MS Excel 2010, c) frantically
trying to remember what a B-tree is and how it works.
etc. etc.
