I guess the question then is "how many disks?" We ran a 2000 (upgraded to
an 'E') with six system boards (12 SM81-2's, 2GB of memory, 8MB NVSIMMs)
and 16 drives in three of the big 6-bay Sun diff SCSI trays. (The
original purchase order in 1993, for a six-way 40Mhz/512MB configuration
and 6 Sparc Classics, was over $200K - with a .edu discount!) Sun's docs
spec the machine at a maximum of around 3900W, but we figured we'd size up
the UPS to handle some additional external disks, and went with a 7KVA
FERRUPS from Best Power. (I love those things. Built like freakin'
tanks, and about as heavy.)
Okay, so maybe that was overkill. But having 58 minutes of runtime is
nice:
10:13am up 276 day(s), 21:12, 23 users, load average: 5.50, 5.70, 4.96
Consider that about a week ago they had an accidental Halon blow and a
power outage in the room where the machine is running, and it's still
chugging along. sun4d's kick ass. :-)
Anyway, the ones I rescued have 2x full SSA's in 'em - each. I'm guessing
that's going to put the power consumption nearer the high end. Plus, the
aforementioned machine has been on my list for many years now, but they
just haven't gotten around to decommissioning it - I was hoping that'd be
my severence package. Ah, well. I'm a patient man. :-)
