Doing what? Is this a quantitative thing, or did it just feel faster?

A 10,000 SCSI RPM drive is going to outperform a 7200 RPM IDE drive by a
fairly large factor. More depending upon seek time, which is usually better
for SCSI drives. I'd say this affects the machine's performance in a number
of ways; especially if you're delving into a lot of virtual memory.

For some tasks, though, this isn't going to make a bit of difference.
