First, forget about DOS ;)

Check http://www.linux-wlan.org/index.html for linux wlan device
support. Not all devices seem to have a working driver.
Building a Linux Router project package for wlan/usb support is a lot of
work, so if your box has a harddrive I suggest you put a small
distribution (debian, gentoo whatever) since that's a lot less work to
get running and keep up to date vs the dedicated router distributions.
