This is turning into a VFAQ.

A 6.5.N update set includes:

   IRIX 6.5.N Installation Tools CD
   IRIX 6.5.N Overlays (between 2 and 4 CDs)
   IRIX 6.5 Foundation 1 & 2 CDs
   IRIX 6.5 Development Libraries CD
   IRIX 6.5 Development Tools CD
   ONC3/NFS Version 3 for IRIX 6.2-6.5 CD
   IRIX 6.5 Applications (any from 6.5.0 through 6.5.N)

The Applications CD isn't version-specific, but it's possible that a
release that's newer than the installed version of IRIX may require
patches that aren't part of the OS distribution.

I've run IRIX 6.5.3, 6.5.8, 6.5.10, and 6.5.16 with pretty much every
permutation of the 6.5.8 and 6.5.16 Application CDs without problems.
